Ordered from the worst to the best. How the selection was made may be biased as its made by someone who leans more towards seafood tacos. Shout out to James for recommending some of these spots!

#12 Fisher’s (Little Italy)
555 W Beech St, San Diego, CA 92101
Shrimp taco ($9)
This was the worst taco I’ve ever eaten. There was only 1 shrimp in the taco, the rest of the ingredients were only in puree form, so it was weird. Definitely an over-priced and sad taco. However, the cocktail makes this place worth the visit. Ask for a cocktail with smirnoff tamarind, mango puree, red bull, chamoy and tajin (this is not on their menu!).

#11 street tacos (PB)
One of the 2 food trucks in front of the Taco Bell - 4401 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109
chicken tacos with added jalapenos (wasn’t cheap for a food truck)
This was the most oily food I have ever laid my tongue on, in my entire life. It was so oily that it made me feel sick. Takes a certain type of mindset to enjoy this food. But apart from the oiliness, the flavor combination was coherent.

#10 La Playa Taco Shop (Mission Beach)
3973 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 92109
This place caught our eye due to the long lines. We had carnitas and… shrimp tacos (of course). The tortillas weren't fresh and flies were flying literally everywhere so they ate the food more than we did. Unfortunately, the food didn’t slap.

#9 The Craft Taco at SOVA (Sorrento Valley)
11585 Sorrento Valley Rd # 108, San Diego, CA 92121
Al pastor taco + shrimp taco (~$20)
This place does “craft tacos”. I got the craft shrimp taco; the shrimp were huge and juicy! However, the tortilla was made from blue corn, so it tore quickly and I had to eat with a fork, which took away from the indulgence. For the al pastor taco which was sold under “street” tacos the meat was a bit dry. Also, I prefer preparing my own sauces when eating tacos, these were already sauced.

#8 Mike's Taco Club (OB)
5060 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107
spicy shrimp taco + northern tijuana taco ($14.85)
The northern Tijuana taco’s meat was cooked right and was soft and juicy. The spicy shrimp taco’s shrimp was super tiny, but it was the spiciest taco I’ve eaten among all other spicy tacos. My mouth burned for half an hour. Also, they had beans in the taco which I didn’t see at all in other tacos I had in SD. I liked the Tijuana taco better, but overall with the other ingredients it was indulgent. However, a certain kick was missing…

#7 Cecilia's Taqueria (Liberty Public Market)
2820 Historic Decatur Rd, San Diego, CA 92106
shrimp taco + al pastor taco + carnitas taco ($15)
I went to this place on a holy Taco Tuesday. All the tacos were super indulgent and the meat was cooked nice and juicy. I loved the different combinations with other fresh ingredients. A certain kick was still missing tho.

#6 Casa de Maria Restaurant (Old Town)
2611 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110
2 shrimp tacos with tamarind sauce ($20)
The shrimp tacos cooked in tamarind sauce were spicy in the first bite but then evolved into a sweet aftertaste. The shrimps weren’t as juicy as I like them to be. At this point, the kick is almost there but not quite.

#5 The Taco Stand
3000 Upas St #105, San Diego, CA 92104
spicy shrimp taco + carnitas taco + steak taco
We had high expectations for this place as it was recommended to me multiple times. They were delicious, and each of the combinations was so fresh and coherent. I also loved the pickled red onions given as a side.

#4 Oscar's Mexican Seafood (PB)
746 Emerald St, San Diego, CA 92109
Tried many.. Favorite: spicy shrimp taco
When I first tried Oscar’s by myself I didn’t get the hype. It was ok. When I tried It again I got hooked! All the tacos have the same ingredient combination. I loved battered fish and octopus tacos but the spicy shrimp tacos altered my brain chemistry. Spicy in the ‘flavor enhancing’ way, and the shrimps were juicy and snappy. Their ceviche was also bomb, as well as their guac!

#3 Tacos El Gordo (Gaslamp)
511 F St, San Diego, CA 92102
Only tried the beef tacos as the line for the pork tacos was super long. Also tried taco with cactus. The cactus tasted like pickles (in a good way). The ingredients weren’t various so the tacos were simple compared to others I have tried. However, they were simple and delicious as the ingredients themselves were fresh and yummy. The meats were cooked perfectly.
#2 City Tacos (PB)
4516 Mission Blvd e, San Diego, CA 92109
Tried many.. Favorite: camaron enchilado
City Tacos in PB was one of my favorite hangout spots. After work, we would sit outside and get beer, listen to metal, and people-watch. The thing about city tacos was that each of their ingredient combinations was unique and brilliant. We preferred flour tortillas but I don’t remember why. Various sauces were also available on the side, but the tacos were already sauced as well. I didn’t need to sauce them more, as their well-thought-out combination worked so well. Camaron Enchilado altered our brain chemistry permanently. The way they melted cheese on the tortilla and stuff… Yum.

#1 Pacific Beach Fish Shop (PB)
1775 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109
Tried many.. Favorites: ahi taco with garlic butter seasoning, swordfish taco with blackened seasoning
(~$9/taco)
I thought nothing was going to go between me and City Tacos. This was until I discovered PB Fish Shop. This place is pricier and usually had the longest lines even on weekdays. You can choose the fish type and the seasoning of the tacos. The ingredients are the same apart from that, but still, the quality and the way they cook their fish set them apart. We also took a foodie friend who lives in LA and he said these were the best seafood tacos he has ever had.
